Safe sleep basics
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep:
- On their back, on a firm, flat surface.
- With only a fitted sheet: no pillows, bumpers, blankets or stuffed animals.
- In your room but not in your bed, ideally for the first months. A bedside crib keeps your baby close on their own surface.
- Only on the mattress made for that crib or playpen, with no gaps around it and no extra padding.
Use each crib and playpen only up to the age, weight or stage the manufacturer gives (for example, stop when your baby starts sitting up or trying to climb out, if the manual says so).
Rent or buy?
For a one- or two-week vacation, renting a pack and play is practical. For a month or longer, buying usually costs less: one rental company in Guanacaste lists a pack and play at $12 a day, about $360 a month. Our Easy Fold play yard costs ₡40,000 (about US$88), and a bedside crib starts at about ₡55,000. And you know exactly how clean it is and who used it before.

Frequently asked questions
What is a pack and play called in Costa Rica?
Usually “encierro” or “corral”. A bedside crib or co-sleeper is a “cuna colecho” or “colecho”.
Where can I buy a pack and play in Costa Rica?
At La Casita del Bebé in Grecia, Alajuela, or online with shipping anywhere in Costa Rica, free on orders from ₡65,000. We answer on WhatsApp in English.
Is a bedside crib (co-sleeper) safe?
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends sharing the room, not the bed. A bedside crib that is properly attached, with its own firm mattress that fits without gaps and nothing loose inside, keeps your baby close on a separate surface.
